Tocqueville the visitor

Tocqueville made a visit to study the US in the early 1800s and after his return to Europe he wrote Democracy in America. For one who wishes to understand democracy this is an excellent study. One item of interest for the current president is Tocqueville's notation that when he first arrived in the United States, he noted "with surprise that there was practically no state in the country; there only was freedom." He noted that "individual interest is the prime mover" and things appear to be organized and happening.

Mr. President quit reading about Lincoln and begin reading some Tocqueville.
