Texas Monthly Mag best legislators for the 09 session

Texas Monthly’s Best: Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas) - This is the guy that sponsored legislation for local option elections to add an additional ten cents a gallon to gasoline for local governments to use as they see fit with regards to transportation projects.

Texas Monthly must have non-profit status! An outfit making a profit would not attempt to pay more in taxes.

City sues citizens in the name of debt

Mayor Smith and the city council appear to have lost their marbles and our activists in Friendswood have sounded the alert. The City of Friendswood has not been able to get voter approval for bonds the council wants to issue, so the city council has gone to court to ask if state law allowing for the issuance of tax revenue certificates of obligation without voter approval trumps the Friendswood City Charter which prohibits issuing CO's without voter approval. They will be in Travis County District Court on Monday, 179 miles away from the Citizens of Friendswood (over 350 miles round trip). So much for citizen participation…

This lunacy is best explained in this report by the Lone Star Times, and in this story in the Friendswood Journal. The following is from the Friendswood Journal article:

"Friendswood Mayor David J.H. Smith said during Monday's session at City Hall, 'We're the plaintiffs. We sue the citizens, per se, the citizens of the state of Texas…'"

Cities are not political subdivisions of the state, and that is why they have city charters. The voters of Friendswood changed the city charter for a reason, prohibiting city leaders from issuing non-voter approved bonds. Now we see why. Friendswood is carrying $74 million in debt (principal plus interest) and has a population of only 33,486 … that represents city debt of $2,242 per man, woman and child.

Is it just me

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. - Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson saw the need; however, it just seems we have a lot more tyrants today than patriots. This cannot be a good thing...........................Wonder if there is a change taking place with evil winning over good more often? Patriots need to stand up and prevent the evil winds of change from taking place.

Property tax protection - good and bad news

Property tax protections passed

Rep. John Otto (R-Dayton) headed The Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform Select Committee this interim and worked hard this session to get some significant property tax appraisal reform legislation passed. He filed a large bill with many reforms, but was successful in breaking the bill down and passed some of those measures. Click here for highlights of the property tax reforms passed this session.

Taxpayer protections failed to pass

We were unable to enact legislation to provide voter approval for local government spending to exceed the population and inflation – or 5%. Your taxpayer-funded lobbyists, local government associations, and local elected officials fought hard to keep this bill from passing. House Ways and Means Chairman Rene Olivera told the Texas Association of Counties that he would not allow the bills to get a vote in his committee. Though the votes to pass out of committee were there, he turned his back on the taxpayers and upheld his promise to the tax spenders.

Whisper is

Someone had a talk to our non-resident PISD board member and rumor has it that he has tenured his resignation. Current law in Texas states he tenured his resignation the day he moved from the district. Wonder if someone finally called his hand?

You know how rumors go...................................

Can you believe the nerve of the reps in Austin

Rep. Corona wanted a local option election that would add an additional 10 cents to a gallon of gasoline. You fought hard and you defeated this move by a tax and spend Republican. It took the last day of the session to kill this measure; however, it was completed. Rep. Corona needs to decide if he is a conservative, and the people he represents need to help him pack his bags for a NO return trip to the legislature.

"Texans aren’t interested in unproductive spending and higher taxes. Those in the political leadership of our schools, cities, counties and state need to do a better job of listening to the people, not other politicians."
